JPG to PNG

Convert JPG or JPEG images to PNG in your browser. Up to 10 at a time, with a size comparison so you can see what the change costs.

Will the picture look better as PNG?

No, and it is worth knowing before you convert. A JPG has already thrown away some detail to keep the file small. Converting it to PNG stores the remaining pixels exactly, including any blockiness or fuzzy edges the JPG had. Nothing is recovered. What you gain is that nothing more will be lost from here on.

Good reasons to convert anyway

  • You will edit and save the image several times. Each JPG save loses a little more detail. Working in PNG and exporting once at the end avoids that.
  • You are adding text, arrows or shapes. Sharp overlays stay crisp in PNG and pick up fuzzy halos in JPG.
  • A program or template asks for PNG. Some design tools, game engines and sticker makers only take PNG.

Making the background transparent

PNG supports transparency, but converting doesn’t create it. A JPG photo of a logo on white will still have a white box around it after conversion. Someone has to decide which pixels are background and remove them. For signatures and ink on paper, the signature extractor does this automatically and saves a transparent PNG.

Why the PNG is so much bigger

The PNG files from this page are optimized with OxiPNG, which finds the smallest lossless encoding, but photos simply don’t compress well without loss. If you need a small file and don’t need any of the reasons above, keep the JPG.

Questions

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. They are the same format; .jpeg and .jpg are just two spellings of the file extension. Both are accepted here.

Does the quality slider matter for PNG?

No. PNG is lossless, so the slider has no effect on PNG output. It only applies when the target is JPG, WebP or AVIF.
