Getting the Android adaptive icon right
An adaptive icon is two 108 dp layers. The launcher masks them into a circle, squircle or rounded square depending on the phone, and only the centre 66 dp is guaranteed to show. Tick Show Android safe-zone guide and keep your logo inside the circle. Anything outside it may be cut off on some devices.
The adaptive background is set separately from the icon background: a solid colour, a gradient, or an image you upload. Keep it simple; the launcher moves the layers slightly when the icon is touched, and a busy background makes that look messy.
Store rules worth knowing
- Apple rejects app icons with transparency, so every iOS and watchOS file here is flattened onto your background colour.
- Apple applies the rounded corners itself. Supply a full square; don’t round the corners in your artwork.
- Google Play wants a 512 × 512 px PNG up to 1 MB, also full square. Google applies the mask.
